#7 Mallard Creek opened what head coach Mike Palmieri believes will be a very good season for the two-time defending North Carolina Class 4AA champs on Saturday with an impressive 58-6 thrashing of seven-time champ Independence. The loss was one of the worst ever for the Patriots.
The Mavericks (1-0) blew-open the game with four touchdowns in the third quarter that extended a 24-6 halftime lead.
Mallard Creek’s defense was rock solid, allowing only 114 yards in total offense. The Mavs limited Independence to minus-8 yards rushing.
On offense, senior quarterback James Smith threw four TD passes and ran for two more.
Next up for Mallard Creek is three-time N.C. state champ Butler on Friday.
