The chase for the 2022 High School Football America national championship, powered by NFL Play Football, gets real this week.

Reigning national champ and No. 1 Mater Dei (California) plays No. 2 St. John Bosco (California) on Friday in Southern California. The winner will have the inside track to the national championship that has been won by Mater Dei in three of the last five years. St. John Bosco finished No. 1 in the nation in 2019.

On Friday, No. 136 JSerra almost ended the No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown when the Lions gave Mater Dei all it could handle before losing 21-13.

Speaking of scares, No. 4 St. Frances Academy (Maryland) almost had its national championship dreams dashed in Hawaii. After traveling nearly 5,000 miles from Baltimore, the Panthers needed two scores in the final eight minutes in its comeback 22-15 win against reigning Hawaii Open Division champ Kahuku.

The top four teams in the latest High School Football America 300 are in the same spot they started the year.

Georgia’s Buford sits at No. 3 after a perfect 6-0 start that includes four teams inside the Top 300. After a bye week this week, the three-time defending state champs play No. 20 Mill Creek on October 14.

With most of Florida still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Ian, some South Florida teams did play this weekend.

No. 5 Miami Central stays in the national championship hunt after its 41-0 shutout of North Miami Beach. On Friday, the Rockets will play No. 28 Miami Northwestern.

Hurricane Ian caused the game between No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 297 Miramar to be cancelled.

The storm postponed the game between No. 7 Chaminade-Madonna and No. 166 Treasure Coast to Tuesday night. The Titans are 1-4, but all four losses have come against Top 300 teams.

No. 12 American Heritage (Plantation) picked-up an impressive 21-2 win over two-time Class 4A state champ Cardinal Gibbons, which drops two spots to No. 21 in the latest rankings created with HSFA’s proprietary algorithm.

Miami’s Columbus High breaks into the Top 25 at No. 24 after beating Miami High School for a 6-0 start. This week, the Explorers will face No. 140 Homestead.

After double-digit newcomers during the first five polls of the year, only four new teams are welcomed into the HSFA 300 this week.
