St. John Bosco returns to No. 1 in HSFA 300 high school football rankings

For the second time this year, St. John Bosco (California) sits at the top in the High School Football America 300 national high school football rankings, powered by NFL Play Football. The Braves jump to No. 1 after a dominating 28-0 shutout of former No. 1 Mater Dei (California) Friday night in Southern California. Mater Dei falls to No. 3 in the latest rankings created with our proprietary algorithm.

As we pointed out last week, Mater Dei will probably get another shot at its arch-rival in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Bosco and Mater Dei have won five of the last six HSFA national championships.

Many will ask why Bishop Gorman (Nevada) didn’t move to No. 1? It simply comes down to the fact that the Gaels strength of schedule (SOS) isn’t as strong as SJB.

BG’s SOS was hurt by the Miami Central’s overtime loss to Norland in South Florida Friday night. The Rockets, who lost to Gorman 39-35 in Las Vegas in early September, tumble from No. 11 to No. 27 in the latest rankings.

Gorman’s road to a Nevada state championship is an easy one. No. 167 Liberty (Nevada) is the only ranked team they will face in the playoffs. During the regular season, Gorman routed the Patriots 49-6.

Contrast Gorman’s schedule with Bosco’s road to a possible state title. Every remaining opponent for the Braves will be ranked in our Top 300.

Mill Creek (Georgia) makes an eight place jump this week to No. 10. The reigning Georgia 7A champs defeated former No. 8 Buford Friday night before a national television audience on ESPN2. The loss drops the Wolves four spots to No. 12.

The aforementioned Norland Vikings make the biggest jump inside the Top 100. After the 29-26 win over Miami Central, the Vikings move from No. 55 to No. 26.

Interestingly, Norland had been scheduled to Bosco in Southern California on September 1. That game was cancelled, forcing the Braves to scramble for a new opponent.

Florida continues to lead the national rankings with 48 teams. The Sunshine State is followed by Texas with 35 teams. Georgia is in third place with 33 teams, followed by California with 29.
