There are no changes in the latest High School Football America California Top 25 high school football rankings, powered by NFL Play Football. However, the week ahead is loaded with big matchups, starting with No. 1 Mater Dei traveling to No. 2 St. John Bosco for the top spot in the Trinity League.
These two began the season ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Preseason HSFA 300. The two flip-flopped positions in late August. Bosco, the defending national champ, held the No. 1 ranking until a surprising 30-23 loss to Hawaii’s Kahuku on September 16.
After that Kahuku loss, Mater Dei returned to No. 1. The Braves are currently ranked No. 6 in the nation.
These two national heavyweights have won five of the last six HSFA national championships. Mater Dei won titles in 2017, 2018 and 2021. Aside from last year’s title, SJB also won the ’19 crown.
As far as the 2023 national championship chase, Mater Dei realizes that while Friday night’s game is huge, it also knows there could be another matchup with the Braves down the road in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Four times since 2016, the Monarchs and Braves have met twice in the same season. Each time, the winner of the regular season game has lost in their playoff matchup.
In the other Trinity League matchups, No. 10 JSerra plays No. 14 Santa Margarita and No. 11 Orange Lutheran takes on No. 19 Servite.
