Four team from the Preseason High School Football America Indiana Top 10, powered by NFL Play Football, lost in Week 1.
The shocker of the week was 4A New Palestine taking-down Preseason No. 5 Westfield. Junior running back Grayson Thomas led the way in the 42-28 victory with three touchdowns and 181 yards rushing.
Westfield, which finished runner-up in 6A the last two year, drops-out of the Top 10. NP enters at No. 10.
Preseason No. 3 Carmel, No. 6 Warren Central and No. 7 Ben Davis all lost. However, according to our algorithm, neither team was hurt by the loses. In fact, Warren Central and Ben Davis actually moved-up a spot despite the loses.
Warren Central moves up to No. 5 after losing to two-time defending 6A champ Center Grove 17-8. Normally, this would have been a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference contest, but Center Grove and Carmel are playing as independents this season.
Micah Coyle rushed for 221 yards for the Trojans and a pair of scores.
Warren Central’s tough non-conference schedule continues with the Warriors hosting defending Michigan Division 3 champ Martin Luther King from Detroit. MLK is ranked No. 34 in the Preseason HSFA 100 national rankings.
Carmel lost to Kentucky’s Trinity 17-7. The Greyhounds started the year ranked No. 128 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings. Trinity, coming-off an unusual sub-.500 season will probably move-up from its preseason No. 287 ranking when out first in-season rankings will be released on Sunday, August 28.
This week, the Greyhounds face No. 2 Center Grove
Brownsburg is up one spot in the statewide rankings to No. 3 after opening with a 21-16 win over Ben Davis, which moves from No. 7 to No. 6 after the closer than expected loss, according to our algorithm. Brownsburg will test that ranking this week against No. 1 Cathedral.
