The 2021 Polynesian Bowl will feature former National Football League Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer. This year’s high school football all-star game in Hawaii will be played January 23, 2021.
Doug Williams, who will serve as Head Coach for Team Mauka, played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and The Washington Football Club, winning the Super Bowl XXII Most Valuable Player award, making him the first black QB to both start and win a Super Bowl.
Williams had this to say about coaching the high school stars:
“The Polynesian Bowl is going to be an incredible cultural experience. I’m looking forward to coaching the nation’s best high school players in paradise.”

Following his playing career, Williams began coaching, most notably serving as the head coach of the Grambling State Tigers. He currently serves as Senior Vice President of Player Development for the NFL’s Washington Football Team. Doug is only one of a handful of players honored in two NFL Stadium “Ring of Honors” (Washington and Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Like Williams, Dilfer, a 14-year NFL veteran, also won a Super Bowl. Dilfer, who will coach Team Makai, won his championship ring as the starter for the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV.
Dilfer currently serves as the head football coach at Lipscomb Academy, a high school football team in Nashville.
“I’m excited to be part of the 2021 Polynesian Bowl. The talent is off the charts. It’s going to be a lot of fun coaching these elite athletes.”
Trent Dilfer, head coach of Team Makai
In the past, two other former NFL players have served as Polynesian Bowl head coaches and both were quarterbacks — Jim Zorn (2019) and Steve Spurrier (2020). Both of them are also former NFL head coaches.
The Polynesian Bowl is an annual all-star game featuring 100 of the nation’s top senior high school football players.
