Mater Dei (California), which started the season within a thousandth of a percentage point of preseason and Trinity League foe St. John Bosco (California), is the new No. 1 in the latest High School Football America Top 100 that is created with our proprietary algorithm. The Monarchs move-up thanks to St. Thomas Aquinas’ 9-3 overtime victory over Bosco.
Also moving-up this week is our defending national champ Bishop Gorman from No. 4 to No. 2, which sets-up a 1 versus 2 match-up this weekend between the Monarchs and the Gaels in Santa Ana, California. Gorman won its 55th straight game Friday beating former No. 13 DeMatha.
STA’s win moves them nine spots in the latest rankings to No. 5, while Bosco drops to No. 8.
Southern California will have two big Top 10 showdowns this week. Aside from Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman, No. 4 IMG Academy (Florida) will square-off against No. 9 Corona Centennial (California) in a rematch of last year’s heart-stopping 50-49 win by IMG. The Ascenders, who have won 30 straight, moved up one spot after beating former No. 11 Chandler on national television Saturday.
Defending Kentucky 6A champ Trinity continues to rocked-up in the rankings. The Shamrocks 42-41 win over former No. 17 Warren Central (Indiana) moves them to No. 12 this week. Trinity began the season ranked No. 52, but has had two impressive wins against ranked teams to start the season.
There are seven new teams in the rankings this week — Deerfield Beach (Florida) at No. 68, Starkville (Mississippi) at No. 69, Owasso (Oklahoma) at No. 81, Erie Cathedral Prep (Pennsylvania) at No. 85, Venice (Florida) at No. 94, Helix (California) at No. 99 and Edna Karr (Louisiana) at No. 100.
Expect lots of changes next week as New Jersey and Texas open their regular seasons. There are 18 all-Top games this coming weekend.
