The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is moving from four to eight classifications for the 2025 high school football season.

The NCHSAA Board of Directors voted 17-0 in favor of adopting the “Big 32” proposal. The “Big 32” model means the largest 32 schools will be placed in the 8A classification. The rest of the schools will be placed into the remaining seven classes based on their enrollment. The realignment will be based upon enrollment number for the 2024-25 school year.

A lot still has to be worked out, such as how teams will qualify for the playoffs. In addition, the governing body’s Bylaws Committee is recommending that realignment be reduced from four years to two years. 75-percent of the schools would have to approve the change.
