O’Fallon’s upset of defending 2019 6A state champ East St. Louis is still paying dividends. Thursday, the Chicago Bears named O’Fallon head coach Byron Gettis their Week 4 High School Coach of the Week for the Spring ’21 Illinois high school football season.
At gametime, ESL was ranked No. 1 in the High School Football America Illinois Top 10. The win moved O’Fallon to No. 7 in our Top 10.

Below is an excerpt of the Bears’ announcement about Coach Gettis:
Gettis led O’Fallon (2-0) to a 28-19 victory over the East St. Louis Flyers (3-1), who were ranked No. 1 in the AP Class 6A poll at the time and are the 2019 IHSA Class 6A reigning champions; O’Fallon had missed their previous two game due to positive COVID tests. The win marked their first vs. East St. Louis since 2013. Gettis was hired as the head coach in 2019 after working as the athletic director at his high school alma mater, Cahokia High School. He had previously been an assistant football coach at O’Fallon shortly after graduating from McKendree University. Gettis also spent eight seasons in professional baseball after signing with the Kansas City Royals as an undrafted free agent following high school. O’Fallon will host Edwardsville (3-1) on Friday.
