Erie High School is honoring Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff by naming its football field after him.
Ground was broken last week on Biletnikoff Field, a $6 million project renovation project that will transform the football stadium into a modern, multi-sport athletic facility named after the MVP of Super Bowl XI. The 80-year old Biletnikoff, who played 14 season with the Oakland Raiders, and his wife Angela participated in the groundbreaking ceremony.
Biletnikoff played at Tech Memorial, now called Erie High. In addition to football, he played baseball and basketball, plus was a member of the school’s track team.
The Erie native said, “To have my name on this field, to become part of this school and Erie sports history, it means a lot to me.”

After his playing days, Biletnikoff turned to coaching. His first job was at the high school level at Orange Glen High School in Escondido, California. He finished his career as a Raiders receivers coach from 1989 through 2007.
The renovations are expected to be completed by mid-November.
