The 66th annual Big 33 Classic came down to the final two minutes Sunday night at Bishop McDevitt’s Rocco Ortenzio Stadium. Pennsylvania’s three-game win streak against Maryland was in jeopardy, trailing 27-24 after Charles H. Flowers High’s Sean Johnson scored on a 10-yard run with 2:29 to play.
The Pennsylvania all-stars moved quickly behind Upper Dublin QB Collin O’Sullivan. The winning-score came on a 31 yard pass to Dallastown’s Kenny Johnson.
Johnson, who will play at Pitt, was named Pennsylvania MVP with nine catches for 161 yards and the game-winning score.
After the 31-27 win, Johnson told EasternPAFootball.com, “This was unforgettable, and this got super serious. When (Maryland) scored there at the end, my guys looked at me and told me to make a play, and I made a play there in the end. Those guys were great at Maryland, and I had super tight coverage on me, but I had to win my route and make a play. I got the MVP, but my team won it. I get to end my high school career with a bang.”
Since resuming the its Big 33 series against Maryland, Pennsylvania holds an 8-2 lead in the series. Overall, Pennsylvania has won 15 of the 18 all-star games between the neighboring states.
