When the state of Illinois cancelled its 2020 Fall high school football season due to COVID-19, the state’s top quarterback prospect, JJ McCarthy, transferred from Nazareth Academy to national power IMG Academy. During his one season in Bradenton, Florida, the current University of Michigan quarterback led the Ascenders to the High School Football America national championship.
Monday night, McCarthy and his IMG teammate, Greg Crippen, will try to lead the Wolverines to a college football national championship against the Washington Huskies.
That IMG squad was led by head coach Bobby Acosta. Below, Acosta, who is in Houston for tonight’s championship game, joins Jeff Fisher to discuss McCarthy and Crippen’s roles on that 2020 national championship season and his relationship with the player’s parents.
