With Mater Dei and St. John Bosco winning five of the last six High School Football America national championships, it should come as no surprise that the two Trinity League powers find themselves at the top of our preseason 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.

Mater Dei, which won the national crowns in 2017, 2018 and 2021, starts the year at No. 1. The Monarchs were the preseason No. 1 last year. They held that spot until losing to Bosco in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship.

After beating Mater Dei at the Rose Bowl Thanksgiving weekend, the Braves rolled to the national title by beating Serra (San Mateo) for the CIF Open Division championship. SJB also won the 2019 national championship.

Circle October 13 on the calendar for what should be the first of two meetings between the national powers. This year’s Trinity League regular season showdown will take place in Bellflower, giving the Braves a home field advantage.

Florida dominates the Top 300 that is created with our proprietary algorithm. 43 teams from the Sunshine State open the season in the preseason rankings. Seven of those teams are in the Top 25.

Leading the way is IMG Academy at No. 5, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas at No. 6, Miami Central at No. 9, Columbus (Miami) at No. 12, Chaminade-Madonna at No. 14, American Heritage (Plantation) at No. 16 and Cardinal Gibbons at No. 24. Aquinas, Central, C-M and Gibbons all won state titles last year.

Texas has the second most teams (36) in the Preseason 300, led by defending 6A Division I champ Duncanville at No. 8.

Buford, at No. 7, leads a contingent of 32 teams from Georgia.

Aside from Mater Dei and St. John Bosco, California has 29 other teams in the HSFA 300.

Overall 29 states, plus the District of Columbia, are represented in our preseason rankings.
