The University Interscholastic League will crown its two Class 1A 6-Man high school football championships on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
The 6-man Division I championship game features two 14-0 teams battling each other. Reigning champ Gordon squares-off with Whiteface at 2 p.m. Central Time. Whiteface is playing in its first-ever state championship game.
If Gordon goes back-to-back, it will probably be on the back of its strong defense. Coming into the game, the Longhorns have only given up 84 points all year, with 36 of them coming in the team’s 77-36 win over Abbott in the state semis. Seven of Gordon’s wins have been by shutout.
For those of you not familiar with Texas 6-man football, there’s a mercy rule that ends the game at the half, if one team has a 45-point or more lead. The mercy rule also applies in the second half, ending the game when a 45-point lead is achieved. That means that the semifinal game against Abbott was the first time that Gordon has played a full four quarter game in two years.
Gordon is currently on a 29-game win streak and has won 41 of their last 42 since 2022. Overall, the Longhorns are looking for their fourth state championship.
Whiteface’s offense should give give Gordon a good challenge. The Antelopes are averaging 67.4 points per game.
In the Division II championship Jayton (14-0) plays Oakwood (9-5) at 11 a.m. Central Time.
Jayton’s big win in the postseason came in the regional final when the Jaybirds beat two-time defending champ Benjamin 100-50. Keep an eye on running back Bode Ham who averages close to 18-yards per carry with 41 touchdowns. He’s also a big part of the defense with 107 tackles.
Oakwood has won seven straight after a 2-5 start. This is the school’s first state championship appearance.
