With one month to go in the 2018 high school football season, the jockeying continues for the “mythical” national championship that goes along with being the No. 1 team in the final High School Football America 100 national high school football rankings.
The top spot will be on the line this coming weekend when No. 1 St. John Bosco plays No. 3 for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship in Southern California. Back in mid-October, Bosco beat Mater Dei, which was then ranked No. 1 in our Top 100, 41-18.
In Georgia, two of the state’s quarterfinal matchups feature head-to-head showdowns between team in our Top 100. No. 4 Colquitt County takes-on No. 59 North Gwinnett in a rematch of last year’s AAAAAAA championship game, which North Gwinnett won on a last second field goal. The other head-to-head is No. 69 Hillgrove playing No. 81 Milton.
In Florida, in the Class 7A quarters, No. 85 Plant plays Lakeland, which is new to the Top 100 this week at No. 99. In the 5A quarterfinals, No. 29 American Heritage (Plantation) plays No. 82 Cardinal Gibbons.
Joining Lakeland as new entrants into the national rankings that are created with our proprietary algorithm are: Horn Lake (Mississippi) at No. 90, Utah 6A champ Lone Peak at No. 91, Denton Ryan (Texas) at No. 92, Utah 5A champ Corner Canyon at No. 93, Liberty (Nevada) at No. 94, Brentwood Academy (Tennessee) at No. 95, Coatesville (Pennsylvania) at No, 96, Brother Rice (Illinois) at No. 97, Male (Kentucky) at No. 98 and Vance from North Carolina at No. 99.
