As if the Bergen Catholic/Don Bosco Prep rivalry needed any more fuel. Bergen Catholic announced Wednesday that it has hired former Don Bosco Prep head coach Greg Toal as an assistant, who will serve as the Crusaders’ Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach.
The hire reunites Toal, who has won 16 New Jersey state titles and two national titles, with Bergen Catholic head coach Nunzio Campanile, who served as Toal’s offensive coordinator from 2000-2009. Together they won 110 games with six state titles and one national championship.
“There is nothing he hasn’t done on the football field, so to bring Greg to our program only augments what we are already offering, which we are very proud of to begin with.”” said Campanile, in a news release from the school.
Campanile added, “My father and Greg Toal coached in the same football league back then (when Campanile was a young boy), so we’ve known each other a long time. Coach Toal is just a high character guy, he’s coached literally thousands of kids, and has probably seen just about everything you can see on a football field, I think he will be a great influence on our players.”
Earlier this year, Bosco announced that Toal was retiring, but the rumor mill has been swirling since then, since Toal wasn’t present at his own “retirement announcement.” Offensive coordinator Mike Teel was elevated to head coach.

Back in the 70’s, Toal was an assistant at BC under Tony Karcich.
Earlier this week, High School Football America announced that Bergen Catholic begins the season ranked No. 15 in the High School Football America Preseason Top 100. Bosco is ranked No. 26 in the preseason rankings.
