The chase for the High School Football America national championship is down to the final six weekends of the 2022 season.

The postseason begins this weekend in Florida, Georgia and Texas. 16 teams from those three states are still mathematically in the hunt for the national title, according to HSFA’s proprietary algorithm that is used for the national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.

No. 1 Mater Dei (California) has the clearest path to the national championship. This weekend, the Monarchs play No. 94 JSerra in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinals.

During the regular season, JSerra came close to beating the reigning national champs. After trailing 13-7 in the second quarter, Mater Dei shutout the Lions in the rest of the way for a 21-13 victory.

No. 2 Buford (Georgia) will begin its quest for a fourth straight Georgia state championship Friday night against Peachtree Ridge. Looming on the same side of the bracket for the Wolves are No. 18 Colquitt County and No. 71 Walton.

If Buford advances to the state championship, the Wolves could possibly get a rematch with No. 25 Mill Creek. Buford beat the Hawks 39-27 back on October 14.

Maryland’s St. Francis Academy only has two games remaining and a possible third game if it’s invited into a GEICO State Champions Bowl game. The Panthers best chance to move-up from its current No. 3 ranking will come on November 18 when it faces No. 12 IMG Academy (Florida).

No. 4 Miami Central (Florida) is waiting in the wings for Mater Dei, Buford and SFA to slip up. The Rockets drive for a fourth straight state title begins against St. Brendan this Friday in a loaded Class 2M backet. 2M includes No. 11 American Heritage (Plantation), No. 19 Cardinal Gibbons, winners of two straight state titles, and No. 36 Miami Northwestern.

No. 5 St. John Bosco’s hopes of a national title will rest on a possible rematch against Mater Dei for the CIF-SS Division 1 title. This Firday, Bosco plays No. 86 Orange Lutheran.

Below are the new entrants in the HSFA 300:

  • No. 235 Camden County (Georgia)
  • No. 263 Melissa (Texas)
  • No. 288 Westfield (Indiana)
  • No. 289 Phoebus (Virginia)
  • No. 290 Riverside (Painesville, Ohio)
  • No. 291 Parkview (Georgia)
