It’s not a state championship game, but some might call Friday’s game between No. 1 St. Edward and No. 2 Massillon Washington at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium a state title tilt. This is a showdown of major proportions, especially since the only loss for St. Ed, the two-time reigning Division I champs, in the last 23 games was against Massillon Washington on September 16, 2022. Last year’s 31-28 win for the Tigers feature five lead changes.
The game will also have a major impact on our national rankings. St. Ed is ranked No. 9 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football. Massillon Washington is ranked No. 20.
There are plenty of other big games this week.
No. 3 Archbishop Hoban will play No. 22 St. Ignatius, which is coming off a 24-21 overtime loss to Austintown-Fitch. A-F is up two spots to No. 21 in the latest rankings created with our proprietary algorithm.
In another Top 25 head-to-head, No. 5 St. Xavier will square-off with No. 20 Archbishop Moeller in a Greater Catholic League South battle.
The fourth Top 25 matchup will feature No. 8 Lincoln (Gahanna) traveling to No. 14 Pickerington Central.
No. 4 Toledo Central Catholic, No. 7 Elder and No. 10 Glenville will be playing nationally-ranked out-of-state opponents.
TCC, ranked No. 57 in America, will play No. 251 De La Salle Collegiate (Michigan). Both teams won state titles in 2022.
Elder, No. 116 in the HSFA 300, meets No. 55 St. Xavier (Kentucky).
Glenville, No. 173 in the country, travels to Florida to face No. 4 IMG Academy.
