Mater Dei sweeps postseason awards for All CIF-Southern Section Division 1

High School Football America national champ Mater Dei picked up both 2023 postseason high school football individual awards in Division 1 of the CIF-Southern Section.

Quarterback Elijah Brown, who will begin his college football at Stanford, is the Offensive Player of the Year. He completed over 70-percent of his passes (204-of-290) for 2,950 yards with 39 touchdowns against only five interceptions.

Junior linebacker Nasir Wyatt is the Defensive Player of the Year. Wyatt, who already has two dozen college scholarship offers, had 21 tackles for loss last season.

Brown and Wyatt are joined by eight other teammates on the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 team.

Head coach Frank McManus, a longtime assistant under Bruce Rollinson, was 13-1 in his first season. He led the Monarchs to a 13-1 mark with twelve wins coming against against teams that finished inside our Top 107 — No. 3 St. John Bosco (California), No. 15 Kahuku, No. 16 Corona Centennial (California), No. 29 Sierra Canyon (California) No. 51 St. Frances Academy (Maryland), No. 52 Serra (San Mateo, California), No. 78 Servite (California), No. 80 Orange Lutheran (California), No. 81 Santa Margarita (California), No. 92 Creekside (Georgia) and No. 107 JSerra (California) twice.

Mater Dei has now won four High School Football America national championships since 2017.
