Cha-cha-changes in the HSFA 100 national high school football rankings

The first October High School Football America 100, powered by NFL Play Football, gives a clear idea of what the national championship chase looks like.

Mater Dei took control of its own destiny with its 42-21 win over No. 4 St. John Bosco. If the Monarchs win a California Open Division title, Mater Dei will capture its third national title in the last five years. MD won our national titles in 2017 and 2018.

However, that’s a big IF, since the Monarchs still have four Trinity League regular season games left, along with a CIF-Southern Section postseason that is likely to include another game against St. John Bosco.

One of three of Mater Dei’s four remaining regular season games are against teams ranked nationally. This week, the Monarchs will play No. 127 Orange Lutheran, followed by an October 15 matchup against No. 95 Santa Margarita. On October 23, Mater Dei will play arch-rival Servite, which enters the Top 25 at No. 24.

Waiting for Mater Dei to slip-up are a pair of two-time defending state champs — Westlake (Texas) at No. 2 and Thompson (Alabama) at No. 3.

St. John Bosco holds on to the No. 4 spot in the latest rankings created with our proprietary algorithm. The Braves will try to bounce back from the Mater Dei loss this week against JSerra, the only Trinity League team not ranked nationally.

Defending national champ IMG Academy (Florida) rounds-out the Top 5. The Ascenders, who right now only have four games left, will play three teams in our national rankings — No. 21 St. Frances Academy (Maryland), No. 56 East St. Louis (Illinois) and No. 120 Auburn (Alabama).

There are five new teams in the HSFA 100 this week — DePaul (New Jersey) at No. 93, Santa Margarita (California) at No. 95, Mill Creek (Georgia) at No. 96, Rockwall-Heath (Texas) at No. 98 and Bryant (Arkansas) at No. 99.
