The High School Football America 100 algorithm was put to the test this past week thanks to twelve head-to-head matchups inside our national rankings and the fact that their were three upsets with teams ranked No. 150-and-higher. But, let’s start at the top where Southern California powers No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 St. John Bosco laid the groundwork for a two-team race for our “mythical” national championship.
Mater Dei, our two-time defending national champ, knocked-off No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Maryland) at the Trinity League vs. USA Showcase in Bellflower, California, giving the Monarchs three wins over Top 100 teams in their first four games.
The host Braves opened the tripleheader with another impressive performance against a team from the powerful Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. SJB’s win over former No. 19 Good Counsel (Maryland) means the Braves have now beaten DeMatha (Maryland) and GC from the WCAC.

While both teams have big non-league games left before the start of Trinity League play, most are already looking ahead to October 25 when the two titans collide.
IMG Academy (Florida) put itself in the championship chat with an impressive road win against St. Joseph’s Prep (Pennsylvania). The Ascenders are up to No. 3 this week and have another big road game this week as they travel to the nation’s capital to play No. 24 St. John’s College High School (Washington, DC).
SJC is now 2-2 after dropping two straight, including Saturday’s loss to No. 5 Duncanville. After IMG, St. John’s will host top-ranked Mater Dei.
The biggest upset of the weekend occurred in Southern California where Helix (California), a previous Honorable Mention team, had very little trouble beating former No. 23 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego). The victory jumps Helix to No. 42. CC drops to No. 45.
The Helix win also helps Utah’s Herriman jump into the Top 100 at No. 81 . Herriman is the only team to beat Helix. The Mustangs beat Helix 26-19 in overtime two weeks ago.
Valdosta nipped former No. 11 Colquitt County, which puts the Wildcats at No. 50.

Florida’s Bartram Trail also flies into the national rankings at No. 98 after beating former No. 51 and defending Florida 8A state champ Mandarin.
Also entering the Top 100 this week are Archbishop Rummel (Louisiana) at No. 99 and McCallie (Tennessee) at No. 100.
