The Tuscaloosa News is reporting that the Alabama High School Athletic Association‘s search for one or more locations for the Super 7 high school football championships may be coming down the home stretch.
According to the newspaper, the AHSAA is examing bids from four cities — Birmingham (Protective Stadium), Mobile (South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium, Montgomery (Alabama State’s ASU Stadium and Troy (Troy University’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium) have submitted bids. In its Wednesday story, the Tuscaloosa News reports that AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon said a decision will be made “really soon.”
In June, the state’s governing body was informed by Alabama and Auburn that they were dropping out of their deals to host the Super 7 every three years, because of the expansion of the College Football Playoffs to twelve teams. In 2021, the AHSAA entered into a 12-year, three-city rotation for the Super 7 with Birmingham being the third city.
Birmingham’s Protective Stadium is still contracted for the 2027 and 2030 state championships. However, according to the Tuscaloosa News, the city’s new bid is to host every year staring with the 2025 season and running through 2034.
There’s no word on whether the new contract will be for a single site or multiple locations.
