The Chicago Bears have announced that head coach Matt Miller of St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago has been named the Chicago Bears High School “Coach of the Week” for Week 5 and quarterback Chase Hanson of Mascoutah High School in Mascoutah was named the Chicago Bears “High School All-Star.” The “Coach of the Week” and “High School All-Stars” programs are brought to you by Athletico Physical Therapy. The Bears will make a $2,000 donation to the St. Ignatius football program and direct a $500 donation to the youth football program of Hanson’s choice.
About “Coach of the Week” & “High School All-Star”
The Chicago Bears “Coach of the Week” program was launched in 1996 and “High School All-Star” program in 2011. The “Coach of the Week” program honors outstanding Illinois high school coaches who develop players’ football skills and knowledge, character, leadership, discipline and teamwork abilities. The nomination criteria for the “High School All-Star” program includes on-field performance, community involvement and good sportsmanship. Deserving high school coaches and players are nominated by a panel of local prep authorities and the winning player is selected each week from August 27-October 23. Matt Miller
Miller and the Wolfpack (5-0) registered a 27-0 victory vs. Mt. Carmel (4-1) last Friday, marking their first win over the Caravan since 1928; St. Ignatius didn’t have a team from 1964-2005. Mt. Carmel was ranked No. 1 in the AP Class 7A poll at the time. The Wolfpack have shut out opponents three times this season and outscored them 187-24 across five games. Miller has been head coach of the program since 2017. St. Ignatius is now ranked No. 4 in the AP Class 6A poll and will host De La Salle (2-3) on Friday.
Chase Hanson
The senior quarterback scored eight touchdowns (four rushing and four passing) in Mascoutah’s 65-36 win at Jersey (2-3) on Friday to help them overcome a 22-21 deficit and remain undefeated this season; he threw for 219 yards and ran for 214, in addition to playing defense. Hanson has 30 total touchdowns this year. Mascoutah’s 5-0 record is their best start in 30 years. They are now ranked No. 3 in the AP Class 5A poll and will host Triad (4-1) on Friday.
