Not only will the Kansas City Chiefs be trying to become the NFL team in Super Bowl history to 3-peat, the team’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, will be looking to make history in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans on Sunday.

Mahomes, who played his high school football at Whitehouse High in Texas, will be trying to win his third straight Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award. No other player has won three straight MVP’s in Super Bowl history.

The Texas native is currently tied with Bart Starr (Super Bowls I & II) and Terry Bradshaw (Super Bowls XIII & XIV) as the only players to win back-to-back MVP’s.

If Mahomes, who also won the MVP in SB LIV, can win his fourth Pete Rozelle Award against the Philadelphia Eagles, he’ll close the gap on Tom Brady, who owns five MVP trophies. Brady will be on-the-call for Sunday’s broadcast of the game on FOX.

Another win for Mahomes will also close the gap for the state of Texas on California when it comes to former high schoolers, who have won Rozelle Awards. 14 former California high school football players have won Super Bowl MVP’s, which is double the amount of former Texas players.

Overall, 19 different states have former high school football players that have won MVP awards.

  • California – 14
  • Texas – 7
  • Louisiana – 6
  • Florida, Pennsylvania – 5
  • Ohio – 4
  • Georgia – 3
  • Alabama, New Jersey, Washington – 2
  • Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, West Virginia – 1

Three high schools — Isidore Newman (Louisiana), Lincoln (San Diego, California), Serra (San Mateo, California) — have had two different players win Super Bowl MVP’s.

Wide receiver Lynn Swann, a Serra alum, won the MVP with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl X, which gives the Padres six total MVP’s when you add-in Brady. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame QB won four Rozelle Awards with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Thanks to the Manning brothers, Newman has two SB MVP’s. Peyton won the award after the Indianapolis Colts won Super Bowl XLI. Eli has two Pete Rozelle Awards. He won the MVP award with the New York Giants for Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.

Two running backs, who played scholastically at San Diego’s Lincoln High have hoisted MVP trophies. Former Hornets’ running back Marcus Allen was honored in the Los Angeles Raiders‘ Super Bowl XVIII win. Terrell Davis was honored for his performance when the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl XXXII.

Below is where every MVP played in high school.
