There will be a new champ in Class 6A after three-time state champ Buford moves-up to Class 7A in 2022. The Georgia High School Association ‘s two-year realignment also moved state semifinalists Carrollton and Dacula up to 7A.
Langston Hughes, the team that Buford nipped in the 6A state title game last year is loaded with returning talent after finishing No. 110 in the High School Football America national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football
Tight end Jelani Thurman is a 4-star prospect with nearly 30 college scholarship offers. He caught 31 balls last year with seven touchdowns.
The offensive line will be anchored by tackle Bo Hughley, who’s already given his verbal to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Junior-to-be Prentiss Noland is back at quarterback. Last year, he completed over 64-percent of his passes with 34 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
On defense, Hughes safety Terrance Love has verbally committed to Auburn.
Even though Carrollton, Dacula and Westlake are gone, 6A gets 2020 4A state champ Marist and Blessed Trinity, which won three straight state titles from 2017 through 2019. Last year, Blessed Trinity made it to the 5A state semis.
Woodward Academy is moving up from 5A to 6A. Last year, the War Eagles lost in the second round of the playoffs to Blessed Trinity.
6A is still home to national rankings regular Lee County. The Trojans lost to Buford in the state quarterfinals last year.
Once again, the Trojans, who finished No. 90 in the Top 100 last year, will play one of the toughest schedules in the state with non-region games against 5A state champ Warner Robins and 2015 national champ Colquitt County. LC will also play Lake Gibson, one of the top teams in Florida last season.
