Georgia’s 5A classification is a very interesting one. Thanks to the Georgia High School Association‘s bi-annual realignment, the class features three defending state champs. The re-shuffle eliminates Class 7A, making 6A the largest classification for 2024 and 2025.

2023 7A champ Milton will not defend its state title in the state’s new, largest classification. Instead, the Eagles will be in 5A for the next two years. The Eagles have been “playing up” for years, despite having a smaller enrollment than most of the 7A schools. Aside from last year’s championship, the Fulton County school also won 7A crown in 2018.

Milton is in Region 7, which includes two teams that finished the year ranked in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by N FL Play Football. The Eagles finished 2023 ranked No. 18 nationally.

Also in the region are Gainesville (No. 99 in HSFA 300) and Roswell (No. 205).

While Region 7 is strong, Region 2 is outrageously strong with two reigning state champs. 6A champ Thomas County Central and 5A champion Coffee lead a region that also includes two other nationally-ranked teams in Houston County and Lee County.
