October is here. The leaves are changing. And, the chase for the 2023 High School Football America national championship will heat up as the temperatures cool down.

Three-time HSFA national champ Mater Dei (California) is in control of its destiny, heading into Week 7. Because of its strength of schedule, if the top-ranked Monarchs run-the-table, the school will pick-up its fourth national crown since 2017.

The road to the championship has plenty of hurdles. To finish No. 1 in the nation, Mater Dei will have to win eight games. All eight games will be against teams ranked in the HSFA 300, powered by NFL Play Football.

The biggest hurdle will come in two weeks when first-year head coach Frank McManus takes his squad to No. 6 St. John Bosco (California). Bosco is the defending national champ.

No. 2 Bishop Gorman is expected to win out in Nevada, giving the Gaels their 13th state title in the last fourteen years. Gorman will need some help to win their second HSFA national crown. The Gaels, who won the 2016 national championship, will need someone to knock-off Mater Dei, plus they’ll need to play a highly-ranked team in the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series.

Last year, Gorman beat No. 3 Chaminade-Madonna in the season-ending GEICO game. If Gorman and C-M win out and Mater Dei loses, a possible GEICO matchup could decide the 2023 national champion.
