Down the stretch we come in the chase for the 2023 High School Football America 300 national championship

By the end of this week, we’ll have a clear picture of which team will have the best shot at the 2023 High School Football America national championship. Heading into the weekend, only three teams — No. 1 Mater Dei (California), No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Nevada) and No. 3 Chaminade-Madonna (Florida) — have a legitimate shot at the title.

As we’ve been saying for a couple of weeks, the national crown is Mater Dei’s to lose. The Monarchs head into Saturday night’s California Open Division championship game against No. 25 Serra (San Mateo) as the favorite to finish atop of the national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football. If MD beats the Padres, the Monarchs, who won our national titles in 2017, 2018 and 2021, will clinch the national championship, even though the final HSFA 300 won’t be released until December 17.

So what happens if Tom Brady’s alma mater beats Mater Dei? That would vault Serra into the national championship hunt, along with Gorman and Chaminade-Madonna.

Serra is a heavy underdog going into the Mater Dei game. When the Padres played Monarchs for the Open Division title in 2021, they lost 44-7. Last year, the Padres played St. John Bosco for the Open Division crown, losing 45-0 to the eventual national champs.

Serra’s biggest wins of year came in Week 1 and Week 2. The Padres opened with a 21-14 win over No. 56 Folsom. The following weekend, they shutout No. 55 De La Salle. Both DLS and Folsom will also be playing for state championships this weekend.

De La Salle will face No. 68 Mission Viejo for the Division I-AA championship. Folsom will square-off with No. 299 St. Bonaventure for the Division I-A.

No. 2 Gorman’s season has been finished for two weeks. The Gaels could get a little help in our algorithm rankings if Mission Viejo wins the 1-AA title game. The reason that would help the Gaels is because they easily beat No. 79 Long Beach Poly 60-15 on August 25. Poly owns a 32-28 win over MV.

No. 3 Chaminade-Madonna will be playing for the Florida 1M state championship. The Lions play No. 80 Clearwater Central Catholic on Thursday.
