Give or take a week, we’re near the mid-point of the 2022 high school football regular season. We thought it would be a good time to take a look at the national championship chase with all of the national rankings services.
Below is our media compilation poll that includes the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, USA TODAY Super 25, SBLive/Sports Illustrated Top 25, Massey Rankings, CalPreps and NationalHSFB.com‘s national rankings.
HSFA, CalPreps and Massey are computer based rankings. The High School Football America algorithm is celebrating its 10th anniversary this season. Max, USA TODAY, SBLive/Sports Illustrated and NationalHSFB.com are opinion-based polls.
Our compilation poll awards points to a team on the basis of its ranking in each poll. For example, the No. 1 team receives 25 points, the No. 2 team receives 24 points and so forth.
Mater Dei (California) is No. 1 with 171 points. St. John Bosco (California) is on the Monarchs’ heels with 170 points. The two will meet in Trinity League play on October 7.
Mater Dei, High School Football America’s reigning national champ, is No. 1 in four polls, including the HSFA 300, powered by NFL Play Football. USA Today, CalPreps and Massey also have the Monarchs at No. 1.

St. John Bosco is No. 1 in two polls — MaxPreps and SBLive/SportsIllustrated.
St. Frances Academy (Maryland) sits at No. 3 in the compilation poll. They are ranked No. 1 by NationalHSFB.com.
Miami Central (Florida) is ranked No. 4, followed by Bishop Gorman (Nevada) at No. 5, Chaminade-Madonna (Florida) at No. 6, Buford (Georgia) at No. 7, North Shore (Texas) at No. 8, IMG Academy (Florida) at No. 9 and St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) at No. 10.
Mater Dei is going after its fourth High School Football America national championship in the last six years. St. John Bosco was our national champ in 2019.
It should be pointed-out that both schools played abbreviated spring schedules during the 2020-21 sports season, because of the coronavirus pandemic. The shortened season limited each team’s ability to play for a national crown. IMG Academy (Florida) won the 2020-21 national title.
Overall, there are 43 teams ranked inside the various Top 25’s. Seventeen of the 43 teams are ranked in all seven Top 25’s.
