The inaugural girls’ flag football team at the Menlo School will get plenty of attention this fall with two former San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks helping from the sidelines.
The Atherton, California school has announced former Niners QB John Paye will be assisted by Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young when the program opens fall camp in mid-August. In addition to being the girls’ flag head coach, Paye, a Menlo School alum, is the schools girls’ basketball head coach.
Everyone knows Young, who won three Super Bowls during an outstanding 15-year NFL career. Most probably don’t know Paye, who was a 10th round pick of the Niners in the 1987 NFL Draft. In two seasons with the Bay Area club, Paye never saw any regular season action.
“There’s certainly a good amount of excitement in the Menlo community,” said Paye on the school’s website. “I’ve been getting photos and videos of some of the basketball players out with their friends practicing and training on their own for the season.“
The school’s website reported that about 40 girls are interested in the team’s first season.
“Flag football will be a wonderful opportunity for young women to show their talent,” said Young. “Football is a great team game that teaches tremendous life lessons. I want to help build women’s flag football.”
Earlier this year, California announced it has added girls’ flag football as an official varsity sport.
Over the past several years, the National Football League and its teams have invested millions of dollars to expand flag football worldwide.
