It didn’t take the powerful North Shore High School football program long to find a replacement for legendary Jon Kay. The Mustangs have elevated offensive coordinator Willie Gaston to head coach.
Gaston, who was a star quarterback for North Shore from 1999-2001, was part of Kay’s staff that won four state championships. After his high school days, he went on to play in the secondary at the University of Houston. Eventually, he signed a free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens in 2007, but never played a game professionally.
“I’m very excited about this opportunity, and I can’t wait to work with the kids and see much further we
can grow as a team,” said Gaston via a Galena Park Independent School District news release.
Kay resigned yesterday to become Rice University’s linebackers coach.
During his nine years at the head of North Shore, the Mustangs were 117-18 with 6A Division I titles in 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Last year, North Shore lost to Duncanville in the championship game. The Mustangs finished No. 10 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.
